What does this mean?

While the names will be changing from M1 and M2 to M3 and M4, the decision-making process for selecting a TaylorMade fairway wood will remain the same for the most part, with the key component being the value that a player places on customization. For those who want the ability to use movable weight technology and an adjustable loft sleeve to achieve their ideal ball flight, trajectory, and spin rate, the M3 will be the perfect choice. Also of note, the M3 will feature a smaller profile, slightly deeper clubface, and lower spin rates than the M4, which should make it a popular option for high-spin and high-speed players. For those who are looking for maximum forgiveness and effortlessly high launch conditions, however, the M4 will likely prove to be the better option.

The Tech Story

There have been several technological advances with the M3 fairways woods when compared to their M1 predecessors. Most notably, a lighter crown and sole design has enabled engineers to create a CG position that is lower and more forward, which produces the higher-launching, lower-spinning profile that most typically allows players to maximize distance with a driver. Also of note, the M3’s speed pocket is now longer, which is helping to provide more ball speed on low-face strikes while also better protecting ball speed on shots played from the heel or toe. Additionally, the weight track in the M3 fairways now features 29 grams of weight as opposed to 25 to give players more shot-shaping ability. The track has also been been moved closer to the clubface by 3.5 millimeters. The result is a CG position that is nearly a full millimeter closer to the face, eight percent closer than was the case in the 2017 M1 fairway, which helps create optimal spin rates to maximize distance. And as was the case with the M1 fairway woods, the M3 fairways will feature a lightweight loft sleeve that will offer players 12 unique settings to help them dial in their preferred launch and spin conditions.
