Who’s It For?
One of the biggest iron trends in recent years is the emergence and mass popularity of the players distance category, and TaylorMade’s 2019 P790s are staking their claim as the best players distance iron set ever created. TaylorMade’s engineers updated several details from the 2017 P790 irons to improve forgiveness and distance. However, these irons are not just highly functional, they are also gorgeous to look at. The P790s sport a relatively thin top line, but also maintain a solid amount of mass behind the clubface to promote a confidence-inspiring profile. These irons are an outstanding option for all low and middle handicap golfers that are looking for more distance.
The Tech Story
The new TaylorMade P790 irons feature a forged hollow body construction. Thanks to the hollowed-out clubhead, the soft 4140 soft carbon face can deliver powerful strikes without sacrificing any forgiveness. The irons also boast SpeedFoam Technology, a high-tech urethane foam injected into the clubhead to help the golfer generate impressive ball speeds. Also, TaylorMade built the new P790 irons with more Low Profile Tungsten Weighting, a process that keeps the center of gravity low for more forgiveness and a higher launch than the previous version. In terms of appearance, the new P790s offer a slightly more compact footprint with a thinner topline than the former version. Additionally, TaylorMade designed the sole with a shiny chrome look, different from the subdued satin chrome on the 2017 P790s. Finally, the company’s engineers precisely placed their patented Inverted Cone Technology into each iron to help improve accuracy and precision, while also delivering high ball speeds on off-center strikes.
